Devil's Daughter: The Ravenels Meet the Wallflowers
(Adobe EPUB eBook, Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
Description
NAMED OF THE BEST ROMANCES BY OPRAH MAG!
Although beautiful young widow Phoebe, Lady Clare, has never met West Ravenel, she knows one thing for certain: he's a mean, rotten bully. Back in boarding school, he made her late husband's life a misery, and she'll never forgive him for it. But when Phoebe attends a family wedding, she encounters a dashing and impossibly charming stranger who sends a fire-and-ice jolt of attraction through her. And then he introduces himself...as none other than West Ravenel.
West is a man with a tarnished past. No apologies, no excuses. However, from the moment he meets Phoebe, West is consumed by irresistible desire...not to mention the bitter awareness that a woman like her is far out of his reach. What West doesn't bargain on is that Phoebe is no straitlaced aristocratic lady. She's the daughter of a strong-willed wallflower who long ago eloped with Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent—the most devilishly wicked rake in England.
Before long, Phoebe sets out to seduce the man who has awakened her fiery nature and shown her unimaginable pleasure. Will their overwhelming passion be enough to overcome the obstacles of the past?
Only the devil's daughter knows...

The fifth in Kleypas' popular Ravenels series puts a young flame-haired widow in the path of her late husband's tormenter. But neither is what they seem. When Phoebe, Lady Clare, married her chronically ill childhood sweetheart, Henry, she vowed to take care of him. Eventually, Henry succumbed to his wasting disease, leaving her to raise two young sons. While managing her grief and supporting her children, Phoebe is content to allow Henry's cousin, Edward Larson, to run the Clare estate in Essex. But a trip to her younger brother's wedding at the sprawling Eversby Priory introduces Phoebe to estate manager Weston Ravenel, who sparks her interest in new farming technologies, and in his tall, brawny physique and piercing dark blue eyes. Alas, West had tormented sickly Henry in boarding school, earning him Phoebe's intense dislike. West is something unusual in the genre: a self-reformed rake. When carousing and pleasure-seeking lost their charm, he left London and began a new life of honest hard work on his brother's estate. Phoebe, the daughter of a duke and the wealthy mother of the heir to a viscountcy, is out of his league. Phoebe and West are seated together at a lavish wedding dinner, an exquisite, transporting scene of small intimacies spanning two chapters in which Kleypas (Hello Stranger, 2018, etc.) is at the top of her game. Unlike Henry, West is both "the storm and the shelter"; he "kissed like a man who had lived too fast, learned too late, and had finally found the thing he wanted." Readers will enjoy revisiting beloved characters from both the Wallflowers series and from earlier installments of the Ravenels, although West's protestations of low worth ring hollow when surrounded by happily married friends and relatives with similarly debauched pasts.A widow emerges from mourning with the help of a reformed rake in a truly romantic tale that stands well on its own.COPYRIGHT(2019) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Starred review from February 1, 2019
West Ravenel is the last person on earth Phoebe, Lady Clare, would ever ask for help. Phoebe heard endless stories from her late husband, Henry, about how West bullied him while the two were young boys in boarding school, and now, even though Phoebe and West will soon be related through the marriage of her brother, Gabriel, to West's sister, Pandora, Phoebe still wants nothing to do with him. When West offers to give Phoebe the benefit of his hard-earned knowledge of estate management, however, Phoebe finds herself hard-pressed to say no. Keeping her sons' inheritance viable until they are grown is a priority for Phoebe, which means that she may well accept the farming tips West proffers?but certainly not any kisses! Long-time fans of RITA Award-winning Kleypas will relish the cameo appearances of so many of her beloved characters, while readers new and returning alike will revel in her stylish prose, sharp wit, and swoon-worthy sensuality as she successfully merges the worlds of her Wallflower and the Ravenels series in a splendid Victorian-set historical romance.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
